NO. R-159. JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE WASHINGTON ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE ON ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY.
Offered by: Senator Doyle of Washington County, Senator Cummings of Washington County and Senator Spaulding of Washington County.
Whereas, electric cooperatives brought the wonders of electric power to many rural residents who lacked this modern convenience, and
Whereas, cooperative electric generation has proven to be a reliable source of electric power for many rural communities in the United States, and
Whereas, the owners of electric cooperatives are the consumers who directly benefit from its power generation facilities, and
Whereas, a number of families in the East Montpelier area recognized that a cooperative electric power system would enable them to enjoy the great benefits of electric power, and
Whereas, as a result of their efforts, on December 8, 1939, the Washington Electric Cooperative first generated electric power, and
Whereas, on that cold December day, 50 customers were served over a 90-mile network of electric lines, and
Whereas, in 1999, the Washington Electric Cooperative now generates electric power for a system that serves 9,000 member-customers over a network of electric lines that stretches for 1,236 miles in 41 municipalities in the counties of Caledonia, Orange, Orleans and Washington, and
Whereas, on Saturday, May 8, 1999, the Washington Electric Cooperative will celebrate its 60th anniversary at the Montpelier City Hall in conjunction with its annual meeting, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates the Washington Electric Cooperative on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Washington Electric Cooperative in East Montpelier.
