NO. R-141. JOINT RESOLUTION CONDEMNING RACISM.

(J.R.S. 58)

Offered by: All members of the Senate.

Whereas, the evils of racism have not been eradicated in Vermont, and

Whereas, a recent study by the Vermont Advisory Committee on Civil Rights concluded that:

1) Acts of harassment, bigotry, and violence have been directed at all racial and ethnic minority groups in Vermont.

2) These acts frequently occur in the public schools and as the number of minority students increases in the state, there will be a concurrent rise in the number of racial harassment incidents.

3) Curriculum materials that promote racial stereotypes exist in some of the state's schools.

4) State officials, civil rights, civic and religious organizations and business leaders must alert Vermont citizens that racism continues to exist in the state, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the members of the 1999-2000 General Assembly commit ourselves to counteract racism in all of our society and call on all Vermont citizens to join us.
