NO. R-124. JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING CABOT CREAMERY ON ITS 80TH BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, dairy farmers in the earliest years of the 20th Century were marketing their milk as individuals and too often found themselves unable to sell their product, and
Whereas, 94 farmers around Cabot formed the Cabot Creamery Cooperative in 1919 to turn their milk into butter which could be stored and sold in larger quantities in such a market as Boston, and
Whereas, their $3,700.00 at $5.00 per cow plus a cord of firewood has enabled the cooperative to become one of the successful dairy businesses in the United States, and
Whereas, the Cabot brand is recognized for quality and carries an unmistakable identification with Vermont as the products are sold throughout the world, and
Whereas, Cabot's traditional cheddar cheese has won every major cheesemaking prize awarded in the United States, and
Whereas, Cabot's record sales growth of highest quality value-added dairy products supports Vermont's agricultural landscape and Vermont's economy, and
Whereas, Cabot Creamery has chosen to celebrate its 80th anniversary by joining with the Vermont Historical Society and 36 local historical societies throughout Central and Northeastern Vermont, and
Whereas, the celebration will commemorate many years of Vermont and local history through music, dancing, potluck meals, storytelling, walking and driving tours, photographs, concerts and exhibitions, and
Whereas, the celebration represents a unique opportunity to see and experience the diverse collections of historical treasures maintained in Vermont's small towns and pays tribute to the good people who have toiled to preserve this evidence, and
Whereas, the celebration will be known as the Vermont Heritage Weekend and will take place on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 in all 36 communities, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly extends its heartiest congratulations to the Cabot Creamery and its 1,800 farmer-owner members of the Agri-Mark Cooperative on the occasion of Cabot's 80th anniversary and to the members and leaders of the Vermont Historical Society and the 36 local historical societies upon joining to present a remarkable Vermont heritage event, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jackie Folsom at Cabot Creamery Cooperative.
