NO. R-123. JOINT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING VERMONT HERITAGE WEEKEND.

(J.R.S. 54)

Offered by: Senator MacDonald of Orange County and Senator Shumlin of Windham County.

Whereas, the historically-minded sojourner will find that local historical societies, and their associated museums, are a treasure trove of the agricultural, athletic, artistic, cultural, educational, literary, manufacturing, mercantile, musical and religious memorabilia that vividly portrays life in Vermont from the earliest settlements to contemporary events, and

Whereas, while these wonderful local institutions dot the countryside and villages of Vermont, there has never been a coordinated presentation of their holdings, and

Whereas, dairy farmers who have been so important to the economy of Vermont have long recognized that marketing their milk and related products through a cooperative enterprise ensures that strength through numbers will maximize their market opportunities, and

Whereas, Cabot Creamery, organized in 1919 to produce high quality butter from Vermont's unsurpassable milk, has decided to expand its 80th birthday celebration by financially underwriting Vermont Heritage Weekend which will occur on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20, and be under the curatorial direction of the Vermont Historical Society, and

Whereas, Vermont Heritage Weekend will feature a coordinated presentation of displays, exhibits and special events by the local historical societies of Barnet, Barre, Berlin, Bradford, Braintree, Brookfield, Cabot, Calais, Chelsea, Corinth, Danville, East Montpelier, Fairlee, Greensboro, Groton, Hardwick, Lyndon, Middlesex, Montpelier, Moretown, Morrisville, Newbury, Northfield, Peacham, Roxbury, St. Johnsbury, Sheffield, Strafford, Stowe, Thetford, Tunbridge, Waitsfield, Waterbury, West Fairlee and Williamstown, as well as special presentations at the Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates both the Vermont Historical Society and Cabot Creamery for organizing this spectacular weekend to be known as Vermont Heritage Weekend, and be it further
