NO. R-118. JOINT RESOLUTION EXTENDING CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS OF THE COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL TRAGEDY AND EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE SEEDS OF PEACE MEMORIAL COMMEMORATION PROGRAM ON MAY 20.

Whereas, Vermonters were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent tragedy that has befallen the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado and resulted in the loss of so many promising young lives, and

Whereas, the horrendous and deadly rampage that occurred at Columbine High School must serve as an urgent wake-up call to the nation that the causes of violence in our nation's schools must be urgently addressed, and

Whereas, our nation's schools must be places where students and teachers can work in a safe and secure environment, and

Whereas, it is imperative that in every elementary and secondary school, a spirit of cooperation and nonviolence prevails, and that feelings of hatred, intolerance and anger be addressed in ways that will lessen tension and not lead to the violence and death that has so tragically ravaged Columbine High School, and

Whereas, in Vermont, the Seeds of Peace program, with the assistance of the Department of Education, will sponsor special memorial ceremonies, entitled "Vermont Speaks: Dedication, Reflections and Remembrance," on May 20 in high schools across Vermont that will both honor the memories of the students and faculty member who were killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and raise students' awareness of the need to promote

nonviolence in our own Vermont schools and communities, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the Columbine High School tragedy, and be it further

Resolved: That the General Assembly recognizes the extreme importance of the educational endeavor that the Seeds of Peace organization will hold on May 20 at Vermont's high schools, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Frank DeAngelis, principal of Columbine High School, and to the Seeds of Peace program.
