Offered by: Representative Maslack of Poultney.

Whereas, the second-seeded Poultney High School Blue Devils boys' basketball team became quite accustomed to overtime play during the 1998-1999 season, having played in five overtime periods, four of which were double overtimes, and

Whereas, this experience with extended playing time on the hardwood court was merely a warm up for their championship game against the well prepared team from Stowe High School, and

Whereas, at this ultimate game of the season, the conclusion of the first period had the Blue Devils in a comfortable 28-13 lead, and

Whereas, their challengers from Stowe proved to be a very determined team of athletes who waged a strong comeback effort that resulted in a tied game as the whistle sounded, signaling the close of regulation play, and

Whereas, despite the Stowe squad's perseverance, they were not prepared to confront the challenge of Poultney's expertise in overtime play, and

Whereas, once the extra period commenced, the Blue Devils handily out-scored their opponents from Stowe 11-5, including a basket and two foul shots by senior Jesse Willard, and ultimately captured the Division III championship title, 76-72, and

Whereas, the Poultney offense was led by Aaron Hayes, whose successful shots into the basket added up to 21 points, and Eric Traverse, whose evening total reached 18 points, and

Whereas, all of the Blue Devils, including Keith Williams, Josh Hayes, Scott Robinson, Jon Simons, Nate Lewis, Ben Nesmith, Seth Howard, Austin Boesch, Lenny Rathbun, Tyler Houghton, Jeremy Scott, Josh Morse, Luke Mihevc and Mike LaBate, were essential to the team's success, and
