NO. R-82. JOINT RESOLUTION WELCOMING THE LORD MAYOR DAVID AND MAYORESS NANCY CANNON OF COLCHESTER, ESSEX, ENGLAND TO VERMONT.
Offered by: Representatives Dakin of Colchester, Schaefer of Colchester, Severance of Colchester and Vinton of Colchester.
Whereas, in 1763, the governor of New Hampshire issued a grant for the purpose of establishing a municipality on the shores of Lake Champlain immediately north of the Winooski River, and
Whereas, the new settlement was named Colchester in honor of the municipality in Essex, England from which its founders, or their ancestors, set forth for the new world, and
Whereas, when the state of Vermont was created from the territory that had formerly been the New Hampshire Grants, the town of Colchester retained its name, and
Whereas, the residents of Colchester, Vermont have an abiding affection for the town in England with which they share a common name, and
Whereas, local citizens, including members of the Community Chorus of Colchester, Vermont recently had the great privilege of visiting their sister town in England, and
Whereas, so delightful a friendship ensued that their counterparts from Great Britain, including the Lord Mayor David Cannon and his wife, the Mayoress Nancy Cannon, are embarking on a reverse journey to Colchester, Vermont during the first week of April, and
Whereas, on Thursday, April 1, the Colchester Rotary Club will proudly host a commemorative luncheon to honor the town's special guests from the British Isles, and
Whereas, this luncheon will enable the citizens of Colchester, Vermont to convey their joyous greetings and warm wishes to their visitors who dwell in Colchester, England, and
Whereas, these exchange visits can draw the two Colchesters into closer bonds of friendship and good will, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is delighted to welcome to our shores, and, in particular, to the Green Mountain State of Vermont, the Lord Mayor David and Mayoress Nancy Cannon of Colchester, England, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Colchester, Essex, England.
