NO. R-77. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO COMMEMORATING MARCH 19, 1999 AS NATIONAL AGRICULTURE AWARENESS DAY.

Whereas, Vermont is famous for its natural resources and working landscape, and agriculture has played and will continue to play an important role in defining the unique character and economy of our state, and

Whereas, Vermont is recognized around the nation for its beautiful landscape and rich heritage, based upon our proud agrarian history, and

Whereas, Vermont farmers utilize more than 1.2 million acres of land as they tend the working landscape for which Vermont is famous, and

Whereas, the number of Vermont dairy farms increased during the last year for the first time in many years, and

Whereas, Vermont ranks first in the New England region for agricultural cash receipts, and

Whereas, 50 percent of the general public is more than two generations from the farm, resulting in the lack of knowledge of where our food and fiber come from, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is proud to commemorate March 19, 1999 as National Agriculture Awareness Day as an opportunity to celebrate our agricultural past, to honor our farmers and producers, and broaden our awareness of issues and policies which can help strengthen Vermont's agricultural base.
