NO. R-63. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE CHRONICLE ON ITS SILVER ANNIVERSARY.

Offered by: Representative Hathaway of Barton.

(J.R.H. 54)

Whereas, feature journalism that affords its readership an in-depth analysis of community and regional issues from a variety of perspectives is often lacking in the daily press which tends to emphasize late-breaking headlines, and

Whereas, the Chronicle is an outstanding example of a regional weekly newspaper that has ably filled this important journalistic gap, and

Whereas, the history of the Chronicle represents the determined efforts of enterprising individuals who were intent on providing the Northeast Kingdom with an important new forum for reporting the events and lives of the region, and

Whereas, Chris and Ellen Braithwaite of East Albany, in conjunction with former New York Times reporter, Ed Cowan, inaugurated this informative periodical in 1974 with meager financial and human resources, and

Whereas, in the true tradition of Vermont that emphasizes self reliance and inventive ingenuity, the Chronicle's first edition was compiled during a frigid winter in the Braithwaite's unheated East Albany farmhouse, and

Whereas, the Chronicle has blossomed into a much respected weekly newspaper with a circulation of 8,000, predominantly in Orleans County, that has been the recipient of multiple awards from the New England Press Association, including a 1998 citation for an outstanding editorial, and

Whereas, Chris and Ellen Braithwaite continue to publish the Chronicle from its Barton headquarters; Bethany Dunbar provides superb editorial supervision and Ed Cowan still critiques his now mature journalistic offspring as an admiring but always concerned parent, and

Whereas, the Chronicle now embarks on its second quarter century, prepared to continue its role as a significant forum for the news and views that abound in Orleans, Essex and Caledonia Counties, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to congratulate the staff of the Chronicle on the occasion of this fine weekly newspaper's 25th anniversary and extends best wishes for its future success, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Chris and Ellen Braithwaite at the Chronicle in Barton.
