NO. R-34. JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE MUSICIANSHIP OF BERNARD MATTHEWS.

Offered by: Senator Illuzzi of Essex-Orleans County.

Whereas, Bernard Matthews is a native of Barton and has continued to reside in Orleans County, and

Whereas, as an accomplished nine-year-old alto horn player, he joined his first ensemble, the woodwind section of Mr. Bullard's Orleans Junior Band, and

Whereas, after attendance at the University of Vermont and honorable service as a U.S. Navy signalman during World War II, Bernard Matthews returned to Orleans County and commenced his professional career as a much-admired music teacher, band and orchestra director at many area schools, and

Whereas, during his decade as an instructor at Orleans High School, he led the school's band, the successor to Mr. Bullard's Orleans Junior Band, and

Whereas, he subsequently brought his music education expertise and extraordinary leadership skills to Barton Academy, the North Troy School, Derby Academy, Craftsbury Academy and Coventry Academy, and

Whereas, after serving for 14 years as a musical instrument teacher and band director at North Country Union Junior High School, he officially retired in 1981, and

Whereas, despite his supposed retirement, he still teaches students at his home and continues to direct the Newport Center Elementary School Band, and

Whereas, in addition to his school-related activities, Bernard Matthews was an active dance band participant and leader for many years, having played in both the Tune Twisters and the Downbeat Trio Plus One, and

Whereas, he and his late wife, Theresa, were married for 57 years, and three of their children have followed in their father's footsteps as music educators, and

Whereas, Orleans and the surrounding towns have been musically enriched because of Bernard Matthews' career, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly recognizes and honors the outstanding musical contributions that Bernard Matthews has made to the musical life of the Northeast Kingdom, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Bernard Matthews.
