NO. R-32. JOINT RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SISTERS OF MERCY'S TECHING AND MINISTERING IN VERMONT.

Offered by: Senator Doyle of Washington County, Senator Cummings of Washington County and Senator Spaulding of Washington County.

Whereas, in 1831, Sister Catherine McAuley established the Sisters of Mercy Religious Order for the purpose of aiding and ministering to the poor of Dublin and subsequently to the thousands of destitute persons residing in towns and villages throughout Ireland, and

Whereas, in 1843, under the skillful leadership of Sister Frances Warde, the Order brought its mission of aid and comfort to the less fortunate to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and

Whereas, the sisters established many Convents of Mercy throughout the eastern United States, and

Whereas, Father Louis de Goesbriand met Sister Warde shortly after her arrival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and

Whereas, in 1874, serving as the first Bishop of Vermont, Bishop de Goesbriand invited Sister Warde to accompany other Sisters of Mercy to Vermont in order to staff the Cathedral School, and

Whereas, Sister Warde accepted Bishop de Goesbriand's invitation, and in addition to serving as the faculty for the Cathedral School, the sisters visited the poor and eventually brought their pedagogic skills to Catholic schoolchildren in 60 Vermont communities, and

Whereas, in 1999, the Sisters of Mercy are now responsible for Trinity College of Vermont, the Mater Christi School and the Institute for Spiritual Development, and

Whereas, in commemoration of their century and a quarter in Vermont, the Sisters of Mercy, in September 1999, will commence a year of Jubilee Celebration based on the theme, "Delighting in the Designs of God," now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to extend its best wishes to the Sisters of Mercy on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Order's service to Vermonters, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Sister Jeannine Mercure, President of the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Vermont in Burlington.
