ACT NO. 125

(H.192)

School Environmental Health

This act directs the Commissioners of Health and of Buildings and General Services to create and maintain a clearinghouse on the Department of Health website. The clearinghouse is to include information that will help schools identify potential sources of environmental pollution in the schools, and operate the schools in a way that will create healthy indoor air quality.

The bill also directs the Commissioners of Health, of Education, and of Buildings and General Services to work with the Secretary of the Agency of Natural Resources to keep the website current, provide technical assistance to schools, and give workshops on environmental health for school personnel. This portion of the bill takes effect one year from this July, in order to give the Commissioner of Health time to seek funds for this purpose.

The Commissioners of Health, of Education, and of Buildings and General Services are also directed to work with the Secretary of the Agency of Natural Resources to develop a model school environmental health policy and plan for operation of a healthy school, and to establish an environmental health certificate to be awarded to schools that have adopted and implemented a plan which goes beyond the provisions in the model policy and plan.

Effective Date: July 1, 2000
