ACT NO. 35

Computer Crimes

This act creates four new crimes: unauthorized access to a computer; access to a computer for fraudulent purposes; alteration, damage, or interference with the operation of a computer; and theft or destruction of a computer. Victims are authorized to bring civil actions. The act also updates the statute on telecommunications fraud to cover not just telephone companies but telecommunications service providers, including cable television companies and satellite system operators. The crime of facilitation of telecommunications fraud is added and the penalties are substantially increased and graded according to the monetary consequences of the crime and whether the crime was a first offense.
