Whereas, Stephan B. Syz served as the Chair of the Montpelier Conservation Commission since its inception in 1992 through May, 1997, and

Whereas, Stephan was a virtual conservation dynamo, instrumental in the preservation and enhancement of Montpelier’s rivers and natural areas through education and land acquisition, and

Whereas, Stephan has been an irrepressible champion for the public to have access to nature and cleared all obstacles to assure that citizens for years to come will enjoy the 152-acre North Branch River Park, including ready access to and from the park, and

Whereas, Stephan has used his resourceful, persistent, but low-key nature to help raise funds for various projects when it appeared that funding sources had all but dried up, and,

Whereas, Stephan was instrumental in the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, establishing the North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier, and

Whereas, Stephan mentored high school and university students and provided opportunities for them to translate their classroom knowledge into field experience, and

Whereas, Stephan was forthright in representing conservation interests on the City-State Commission, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly does hereby recognize the efforts and contributions of Stephan B. Syz for his tireless efforts to preserve the open space and natural environment of the Capital City, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Stephan B. Syz.
