Whereas, Charles R. Blake was a lifelong resident of Newport, having graduated from Newport High School, and

Whereas, he spent a quarter of a century ably and devotedly serving the citizens of Newport City, first as a member of the Newport City Council from 1971-1977, and then for 20 consecutive years in the joint positions of city clerk and treasurer, and

Whereas, Newport City voters demonstrated their appreciation of his most extraordinary combination of competency, efficiency, perseverance and dedication by repeatedly reelecting him to public office, and

Whereas, beyond his official duties at city hall, Charlie Blake was active in many community activities, including his service as secretary of the Newport High School Alumni and treasurer of the Goodrich Memorial Library, and

Whereas, he took great pride in his membership in the Masons and Shriners in which he held many local and state leadership positions, and

Whereas, his comradeship, wise counsel and standard of public service will be missed by his friends and colleagues, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly recognizes the lasting legacy that Charles R. Blake has left to the City of Newport, its government and civic institutions and extends its sincere condolences to his loving family to whom he was deeply devoted, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to his wife, Mary Anne, his son, Andrew, and to the City of Newport, requesting that it be displayed in a place of public view and prominence in the Newport City Clerk’s Office.
