Whereas, Henry J. Battles was a native and lifelong resident of Rutland, and

Whereas, Henry J. Battles was an outstanding student, athlete, and graduate of Mt. St. Joseph’s Academy, and

Whereas, he was a graduate of the University of Vermont, Boston College Law School and the Graduate Tax Law Program of New York University Law School, and

Whereas, Henry J. Battles served his country and was a veteran of the United States Army’s Counter Intelligence Division, and

Whereas, he was a respected member of the legal community and served as President of the Rutland County Bar Association, and

Whereas, Henry J. Battles was elected to four terms as Rutland County Probate Judge before retiring from the bench in 1995, and

Whereas, as a probate judge, he was particularly compassionate in deciding the many children and disability matters relating to guardianship and adoption that were part of his daily judicial calendar, and

Whereas, Judge Battles was known for his marvelous Irish humor that was the signature of his personality, and

Whereas, Judge Battles was recognized in his parish and throughout his community as a pillar of charity and good works, and

Whereas, he was active in many fraternal, athletic and civic organizations, and

Whereas, Judge Battles’ presence will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues and especially his loving wife Betsy and their six children, now therefore be

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its sincere sympathy to the family of Judge Henry J. Battles, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to his wife, Betsy Battles of Rutland.
