NO. R-32. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE RUTLAND HIGH SCHOOL 1996 DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM.

Whereas, the Rutland High School Football Red Raiders played admirably on the gridiron throughout the fall season and entered the Division I championship contest against the Middlebury Tigers with an enviable 9-1 record, and

Whereas, because inclement weather had delayed the final contest for two days, the Red Raiders were truly ready for this pivotal game, and

Whereas, after an evenly scored first half that featured a 71-yard scoring run by Red Raider halfback Joben Fineberg, the two rivals were tied at seven-all at the start of the third quarter, and

Whereas, in the second half, the Red Raiders’ defense prevented Middlebury from scoring any additional points, and

Whereas, Red Raider fullback Jake Conway became the first Rutland player since 1990 to amass 100 points in a single season, resulting in a 20-7 Rutland victory, and

Whereas, the entire team, including seniors Jason Irish, Kieran Keefe, Andy Stephen, John Watson, Chad Galiano, Rick Emrick, Marty Courcelle, Andy Rasulo, Mitch Morgan, Jon Lind, Chris Normandeau and Bill McGarry, along with an outstanding contingent of juniors and sophomores, were all responsible for this impressive season of football, and

Whereas, the skillful efforts of head coach Mike Norman and his able support staff of Mickey Caliguiri, Ron Sabataso, Brian Bettis and Bruce Wing, were essential to the Red Raiders’ season-long success, and

Whereas, the New England Sports Network rated the Rutland Red Raiders among the top ten New England high school football teams for 1996, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the players and coaches of the 1996 Division I Champion Rutland Red Raiders Football Team on their magnificent performance, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to coach Mike Norman at Rutland High School.
