NO. R-8. JOINT RESOLUTION IN THE MEMORY OF MADELINE MANAHAN OF ENOSBURG.

Whereas, Representative Madeline Manahan was a native of Richford, and

Whereas, she was awarded both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Vermont, and

Whereas, Madeline Manahan then embarked on a teaching career in the town of Enosburg that included the rudiments of Latin and that language’s great authors Caesar, Cicero and Virgil as well as French and English literature, and

Whereas, upon completing her teaching career in Vermont, she sought out a new student body as a much respected Peace Corps volunteer, and

Whereas, after returning to Vermont, Madeline Manahan drew on her decades of teaching experience while serving on the Enosburg School Board, and

Whereas, the word retirement was not in her vocabulary, and at the age of four score she embarked on her maiden campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives, and

Whereas, Madeline Manahan served her constituents with distinction, and great vigor, carefully studying the issues of the day and thoughtfully contributing to discussions in committee and debate on the floor, and

Whereas, even during her final illness, she continued to be an active member of a legislative study committee, and

Whereas, throughout her busy life of professional, civic and family responsibilities, she found time to engage in recreational activities such as snowshoeing, and

Whereas, Madeline Manahan dedicated her long and active life to her community, state and nation as an educator and public servant extraordinaire, and

Whereas, there will be many fond memories of Madeline Manahan amongst all the members of the General Assembly who had the great pleasure of making her acquaintance, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the members of the Vermont General Assembly extend their deepest sympathiesto the family of Representative Madeline Manahan on the death of their beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to her son, Michael Manahan.
