NO. R-7. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO CHILDHOOD POVERTY IN VERMONT.

Offered by:Senator Backus of Chittenden County, Senator Ankeney of Chittenden County, Senator Barry of Chittenden County, Senator Brownell of Chittenden County, Senator Riehle of Chittenden County and Senator Snelling of Chittenden County.

Whereas, when the Vermont General Assembly convened its 64th Biennial Session on January 8, 1997, it was petitioned by more than 300 Vermont citizens under the banner "Kids First: End Childhood Poverty in Vermont", and

Whereas, the petitioners represent Vermonters from all walks of life, including the leadership of a multi-denominational gathering of Vermont’s religious leaders, and

Whereas, the petitioners called upon the General Assembly to develop a strategy to end childhood poverty in Vermont, to ameliorate some of the suffering of Vermont’s children in need, and to fulfill its historic commitment to our children, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the petitioners "Kids First: End Childhood Poverty in Vermont" have delivered a powerful, moving, and important message to the General Assembly of the State of Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Senate and the House of Representatives shall endeavor to be ever mindful of the needs of Vermont’s children as they deliberate and enact legislation in this 64th Biennial Session of the Vermont General Assembly, and be it further

Resolved: That the results of our work shall, to the greatest extent possible, ameliorate and reduce the suffering of impoverished children, and bring us closer to the goal of eliminating childhood poverty in the State of Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Kids First: End Childhood Poverty Campaign.
