NO. R-244. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING KATHERINE PATERSON ON HER RECEIPT OF THE 1998 HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN AWARD FOR CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.

Whereas, children's literature serves as a young person's gateway to a lifelong reading odyssey, and

Whereas, the craft of writing literary works for children is a very special talent, and

Whereas, Katherine Paterson of Barre Town has repeatedly demonstrated her flair as an author of this significant literary genre, and

Whereas, since 1964, she has written numerous fictional works for juveniles that address sensitive topics, including sexual harassment and death, in a realistic manner that is meaningful to her readers, and

Whereas, among her many notable publications are "The Master Puppeteer," and "Bridge to Terabithia," and

Whereas, her novel, "The Great Gilly Hopkins" has been adapted as a play that is being locally performed at the Barre Opera House and also on Broadway, and

Whereas, in her nonfiction work "Gates of Excellence" she expounded on her philosophy of writing books for children, and

Whereas, in recognition of her superb writing for children, the International Board on Books for Young People has named Katherine Paterson as the 1998 winner of its biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award, and

Whereas, she will be presented this much deserved honor at a ceremony to be held in New Delhi, India on April 20, and

Whereas, she continues to entice children to the printed word through her exemplary writing, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is delighted to congratulate Katherine Paterson on her receipt of the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Award for her authorship of an outstanding children's book collection, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Katherine Paterson of Barre Town.
