NO. R-225. JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING RODNEY CHASE AND JERRY PARADISE FOR THEIR HEROIC RESCUE OF CALEB RECORD WHO IS PERSISTENTLY STRIVING TOWARDS A FULL RECOVERY.
Offered by: Representatives Emmons of Springfield, Lindgren of Springfield and Darrow of Newfane.
Whereas, on November 22, 1997, 17 year-old Caleb Record of Newfane, the Leland & Gray Boys' Basketball and Soccer Teams' Captain, as well as a National Honor Society student, was severely injured when the car he was driving, while returning home from basketball practice, suddenly plunged 100 feet into the West River, and
Whereas, fortunately his passenger, George Place, Jr. of Brookline, was able to escape from the submerged car and rapidly ascend the river's embankment to search for emergency assistance, and
Whereas, the Brookline youth, after walking a quarter of a mile, quickly succeeded in flagging down Hillary Chamberlain of Newfane, as well as a second vehicle containing Rodney Chase of Newfane and Jerry Paradise of St. Petersburg, Florida, and
Whereas, while Chamberlain rushed Place to the Windham County Sheriff's Department, Chase and Paradise, who bravely waded chest deep into the frigid West River to free the trapped Record, rescued Record and jointly applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and
Whereas, their quick and effective action, which resulted in Place being briefly treated at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for hypothermia, was an act of courage, epitomizing the ideal Good Samaritans, and
Whereas, the students and faculty at Leland & Gray were deeply grieved by the tragic jolt to Caleb's promising future, and
Whereas, his physical strength, persistent determination, and unceasing zest for life have all propelled Caleb Record, following a period of both hospitalization and home recuperation, back to the classroom and basketball court where, in February, he resumed his role as a starting player, now therefore be it
