NO. R-205. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VERMONT STATE HOUSING AUTHORITY.

Whereas, as early as 1968, Governor Philip Hoff recognized the growing need to assure sufficient affordable housing in Vermont and determined that a statewide housing authority would be an appropriate entity to gain access to concentrated federal housing resources, and
Whereas, on March 23, 1968, the Vermont Legislature created the first statewide housing authority in the United States, the Vermont State Housing Authority, as a public body corporate and politic of perpetual duration, and
Whereas, the Vermont State Housing Authority's purpose was, and is, to improve affordable housing conditions and facilities in Vermont by using resources and assistance provided by the federal government for low-rent housing and private accommodations, and
Whereas, since its inception, the Vermont State Housing Authority has been fulfilling its legislative mandate to provide affordable housing services to Vermont's neediest families by utilizing all available federal resources and forming unique partnerships, all without any state funding, and
Whereas, the Vermont State Housing Authority is active in every community in Vermont and is the state's largest provider of rental assistance, providing those services to more than 5,300 Vermont families, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates the Vermont State Housing Authority on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, for being the first statewide housing authority in the United States and for 30 proud and hard-working years of serving the rental housing needs of the neediest Vermonters, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Executive Director, Richard Williams.
