NO. R-181. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE WINDHAM COUNTY READS ORGANIZATION AND ITS ANNUAL MARCH READING CHALLENGE ON THEIR TENTH ANNIVERSARIES.

Offered by: Senator Shumlin of Windham County and Senator Chard of Windham County.

Whereas, introducing young children to the joys of the printed word through oral readings at schools, libraries and community centers is a laudable and significant pursuit, and

Whereas, pride in book ownership will help instill in youngsters a lifelong desire to read, and

Whereas, enticing adults to read for pleasure and personal growth is as essential as encouraging their children to read, especially because American adults' literary skills are increasingly atrophying, and

Whereas, Windham County Reads seeks to promote the centrality of reading in the daily lives of county residents, regardless of age, and

Whereas, this very special organization pursues its literacy mission through schools, libraries, community centers and special events, and

Whereas, among the highlights of its activities is the annual March Reading Challenge that is organized with the assistance of teachers at 40 schools in Windham County, as well as many businesses, and

Whereas, the March Reading Challenge, to be held this year from the 9th through the 27th of March, serves to motivate Windham County residents to read by encouraging them to set personal reading goals, and

Whereas, the culmination of the March Reading Challenge will be the Reading Celebration on April 6 which recognizes all the participants who met their personal reading goals, and

Whereas, Windham County Reads can serve as an excellent model for the establishment of similar programs in other communities, and

Whereas, during 1998, Windham County Reads, and its March Reading Challenge, are proudly celebrating a decade of enticing youngsters and elders, as well as everyone inbetween, to open a book and discover the delights of the printed word, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the Vermont General Assembly congratulates Windham County Reads for its unique role in promoting reading for young and old alike in southern Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Ruth Allard, the Executive Director of Windham County Reads.
