NO. R-172. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING JOHN BOLLHARDT ON THE OCCASION OF BEING NAMED A PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD WINNER.
Offered by: Representative Miller of Shaftsbury.
Whereas, John Bollhardt is a highly entrepreneurial 13 year-old seventh grade student enrolled at Mt. Anthony Middle School in Bennington who while still a sixth grade student at the Shaftsbury Elementary School wrote a school essay on the importance of recycling used clothes, and
Whereas, recognizing that a successful used clothing drive would provide the Shaftsbury Elementary School with additional funds for purchasing school books, John organized and successfully promoted a clothing drive that enabled the student body to raise funds and to learn important organizational and marketing skills, and
Whereas, John gained a well-deserved sense of personal accomplishment from this unusual project, and
Whereas, in recognition of his efforts on behalf of his school and community, he was recently selected as a Vermont recipient of the 1998 Prudential Spirit of Community Award which is annually given to exemplary middle and high school student volunteers from across America, and
Whereas, this special award will be presented to John at a ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C. where John will be among the finalists for additional national recognition, and
Whereas, John's initiative will inspire young Vermonters to organize similarly worthwhile activities, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates John Bollhardt on being named as a 1998 Prudential Spirit of Community Award winner, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to John Bollhardt, to Shaftsbury Elementary School principal, Norma McShane and to
Mt. Anthony Middle School principal, Jon Burns.
