NO. R-165. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO CONGRATULATING JENNIFER LaBERGE ON HER SELECTION AS A 1998 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD WINNER.

Whereas, Jennifer LaBerge, a student at Middlebury Union High School, has been deeply inspired by the life of her mentally challenged older sister, and

Whereas, Jennifer is especially determined to bring forth the self-esteem in youngsters who have difficulties similar to those of her sister's, and

Whereas, since she was 11 years old, Jennifer has directed her energies, and enthusiastically volunteered hundreds of after-school and weekend hours, to the Special Olympics program in which mentally challenged young people can achieve personal athletic accomplishments which bring them and their families great joy and satisfaction, and

Whereas, as a head coach for a Special Olympics swimming team, Jennifer serves as a unique role model for other high school students in Vermont, and

Whereas, in recognition of this very special volunteer commitment, Jennifer has been selected as a Vermont recipient of the 1998 Prudential Spirit of Community Award which is annually given to 104 exemplary middle and high school student volunteers from across America, and

Whereas, this special award will be presented to Jennifer at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., now therefore be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives and Senate:

That the General Assembly congratulates Jennifer LaBerge on her dedication to the Special Olympics program and on being named as a 1998 Prudential Spirit of Community Award winner, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jennifer LaBerge.
