NO. R-154. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO HONORING JUDGE SILVIO T. VALENTE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE JUDICIARY.
Offered by: Senator Bloomer of Rutland County.
Whereas, Silvio T. Valente is a native of Rutland, the city where he has continued to reside, and
Whereas, after graduating from the University of Vermont and Boston College Law School, he entered the private practice of law, and
Whereas, Silvio T. Valente was an able prosecutor during his tenure as a Rutland County Deputy State's Attorney, and
Whereas, his legal skills and civic judgment were acknowledged by the voters of Rutland City who elected him as the City Grand Juror and as a member of the Board of Aldermen, and
Whereas, as an attorney, Silvio T. Valente was active in the American, Vermont and Rutland County Bar Associations, the latter of which he served a term as president, and
Whereas, his reputation for professionalism and integrity resulted in his appointment in 1974 to the Superior Court bench where he served with distinction for nearly 24 years, and
Whereas, Judge Silvio T. Valente was known for his belief that judges must not act as legislators when deciding cases, and
Whereas, during his years on the bench, he developed a mock trial program as a way to educate students on the role of the judiciary, and
Whereas, in December 1997, Judge Valente retired from the bench, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is pleased to recognize the outstanding service that Judge Silvio T. Valente has given to the Vermont Judiciary, and, indeed, to the entire State of Vermont and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Judge Silvio T. Valente.
