NO. R-139. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MARC GILBERTSON AND LAURA WILSON FOR EARNING PLACES ON THE 1998 UNITED STATES OLYMPIC NORDIC SKI TEAM.
Offered by: Representatives Brooks of Montpelier and Kitzmiller of Montpelier.
Whereas, Nordic skiing is a personally challenging and satisfying sport that is ideal for Vermont's wintery climate, and
Whereas, the ultimate reward for a Nordic skier is to be named to the United States Olympic Team, and
Whereas, Marc Gilbertson, as a senior at Montpelier High School, was the state
cross-country running champion and an enthusiastic Nordic ski racer, and
Whereas, while studying at Colby College in Maine, and more recently as a much respected teacher at Lamoille Union High School, he continued to pursue his passion for racing on the snowy ski trails, and
Whereas, Marc harbored the very lofty and laudable goal of skiing at the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano, Japan as a member of the United States Nordic Ski Team even though he had met neither of the typical prerequisites of membership on the U. S. National Team nor prior participation in World Cup competition, and
Whereas, determined to reach his special objective, he took a leave of absence from his teaching duties to devote his entire mental and physical attention to winning his place at the Winter Olympics, and
Whereas, in the pivotal 30-kilometer freestyle event at the Gold Cup qualifying competition at Mount Van Hoevenberg, New York, Marc completed the course in one hour, 28 minutes and 37 seconds, a convincing two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor and therefore secured his place on the U. S. Olympic Team, and
Whereas, many of his Lamoille students traveled to the competition site to cheer on their incredible teacher, and
Whereas, Laura Wilson of Montpelier skied at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and was determined to once again join her compatriots on the U. S. Olympic Team, and
Whereas, over the course of the last four years, she has consistently trained with this ultimate goal in mind, and
Whereas, her fine performance at the Gold Cup was rewarded with a spot at the Olympics, and
Whereas, both these Montpelier High School graduates have brought great joy to their families and communities, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is delighted to congratulate these outstanding athletes on their remarkable achievements, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Marc Gilbertson and to Laura Wilson.
