(J.R.H. 96)

Offered by: Representatives Brooks of Montpelier and Kitzmiller of Montpelier.

Whereas, Nordic skiing is a personally challenging and satisfying sport that is ideal for Vermont's wintery climate, and

Whereas, Marc Gilbertson, as a senior at Montpelier High School, was the state

cross-country running champion and an enthusiastic Nordic ski racer, and

Whereas, while studying at Colby College in Maine, and more recently as a much respected teacher at Lamoille Union High School, he continued to pursue his passion for racing on the snowy ski trails, and

Whereas, Marc harbored the very lofty and laudable goal of skiing at the 1998 Winter Olympics at Nagano, Japan as a member of the United States Nordic Ski Team even though he had met neither of the typical prerequisites of membership on the U. S. National Team nor prior participation in World Cup competition, and

Whereas, determined to reach his special objective, he took a leave of absence from his teaching duties to devote his entire mental and physical attention to winning his place at the Winter Olympics, and

Whereas, in the pivotal 30-kilometer freestyle event at the Gold Cup qualifying competition at Mount Van Hoevenberg, New York, Marc completed the course in one hour, 28 minutes and 37 seconds, a convincing two minutes ahead of his nearest competitor and therefore secured his place on the U. S. Olympic Team, and

Whereas, many of his Lamoille students traveled to the competition site to cheer on their incredible teacher, and

Whereas, Laura Wilson of Montpelier skied at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway and was determined to once again join her compatriots on the U. S. Olympic Team, and

Whereas, over the course of the last four years, she has consistently trained with this ultimate goal in mind, and

Whereas, her fine performance at the Gold Cup was rewarded with a spot at the Olympics, and

Whereas, both these Montpelier High School graduates have brought great joy to their families and communities, now therefore be it
