ACT NO. 32
(S.56)

School Buses; Definition

This act conforms the definition of a school bus in Vermont motor vehicle law to the federal requirements. The principle changes involve the definition of a Type II school bus and the color of that type of vehicle. A Type II bus is one designed to transport more than 10 and less than 16 passengers, including the operator. New Type II buses ordered on or after January 1, 2000, are required to be glossy yellow with optional black fenders and hood. All school buses are required to be in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for school buses as of the date of manufacture. Notwithstanding the provisions of this act, any school bus lawfully in operation as of July 1 of this year may continue to operate until July 1, 2007, provided it is maintained in good mechanical condition and is properly inspected.

Effective Date: July 1, 1997
