NO. R-75. JOINT RESOLUTION RELATING TO VERMONT VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL.

Whereas, the Vermont Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located at the northbound rest area in the Town of Sharon on Interstate 89, and

Whereas, this memorial was the first in the nation to be dedicated on October 30, 1982, and

Whereas, 1995 is the twentieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, and

Whereas, on Memorial Day, a vigil has been held every year since the dedication by Vietnam Veterans of the Valley in White River Junction, where the names on the memorial are read, a candle lit for each name, and a vigil maintained to keep the candles lit until sunrise when a memorial service is held, and

Whereas, Veterans from all over the state participate in the vigil and lay wreaths at the stone; and the 1995 General Assembly has ordered the rest area in Sharon closed and removed, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the Agency of Transportation, the Department of Travel and Tourism and the Department of State Buildings shall continue to maintain the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the northbound Sharon rest area, notwithstanding the closure of the rest area, and be it further

Resolved: That the Agency of Transportation, Department of Travel and Tourism and the Department of State Buildings shall explore different options about the future location of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with the Vermont Vietnam Veterans of America, the American Legion Department of Vermont, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Vermont, the Green Mountain Marine Corps League and the Disabled American Veterans, of Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the veteran organizations herein named.
