H.C.R. 70
House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2004 Mount Abraham Eagles Division IV championship boys’ football team
Offered by: Representatives Fisher of Lincoln, Sharpe of Bristol, Clark of Vergennes and Smith of New Haven
Whereas, the first-seeded football Eagles of Mount Abraham Union High School, the defending Division IV football champions, once again faced the U‑32 Raiders for the championship crown, and
Whereas, the first points of the evening game played at Winooski High School occurred when Eagle Scott Curtis dashed 43 yards to score a touchdown, and
Whereas, from that point forward, the Eagles watched their opening lead evaporate rapidly as the Raiders soon were on top by a 20-6 advantage, and
Whereas, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half, senior Matt Huizenga came to the rescue when he carried the ball on a 53-yard punt return as he ignited a 24-point Eagle scoring offensive during the balance of the second period, and
Whereas, after the Huizenga touchdown, the Eagles decided to punt for a short onsite kick as a method to recover the ball and successfully retain possession, and
Whereas, the combination of two more Scott Curtis touchdowns, one of which featured an 80‑yard scoring run, and an additional Matt Huizenga six pointer left the Eagles in command with a 30-20 halftime lead, which proved to be the final score after a defensively intense, but scoreless, second half, and
Whereas, Eagle team members Matt Paul, Eric Messier, Matt Huizenga, Alex Huizenga, Gary Briggs, Scott Curtis, Caleb Tucker, Ryan Kimball, John Wendel, Matt Schlesinger, Mason Coleman, Dan McDurfee, Peter McEvoy, Andrew Graham, Jeff Mayo, Shawn Russell, Taylor Bessette, Derek Epperson, Ned Telling, Ryan Senecal, Justin Conant, Kyle Flack, Curtis Castle, Scott Walch, Ryan Cornellier, Eric Jipner, Dan Heath, Devin Wendel, Ethan Leveillee, Brian Heffernan, and Brenden Hoag each played his very best throughout the season, and
Whereas, head coach Bill Leggett, assistant coaches Ernie Senecal and Jeff Stetson, and team managers Theresa Huizenga, Amanda Reynolds, Robert Schlesinger, and Jamie Merrill each shared in the Eagles’ great season, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates the 2004 Mount Abraham Eagles Division IV championship boys’ football team, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Bill Leggett at Mount Abraham Union High School.
