Whereas, in 1978, Marc Cabot, with the support of a highly talented group of individuals, founded the Cabot Hosiery Mills in Northfield to manufacture socks, and
Whereas, in an era when low wage imports have left much of the American textile industry, and a good deal of “Made in the U.S.A.,” on the brink of extinction, the company has remained committed to its manufacturing facility in Northfield, and
Whereas, the cyclical nature of manufacturing rag and boot socks, long the mills’ primary product, was an economic hindrance to its growth and prosperity, and
Whereas, at best, the manufacturing process existed for only seven or eight months a year, resulting in regular layoffs and high costs during the condensed production season, and
Whereas, in order to stabilize the work schedule, and provide Cabot Hosiery Mills with a more reliable economic model, the management decided to switch to a multisock production line, and
Whereas, 25 years ago, the plant was contained in an early 19th century building, and it consisted of one mechanical knitting machine, no sock dyeing equipment, and a manufacturing capacity capable of producing 8,000 pairs of socks per week, and
Whereas, now located in a 21st century facility which includes six computerized knitting machines and a modern dye house, the plant is able to produce 120,000 pairs of socks per week, and
Whereas, Cabot Hosiery Mills will be seeking a loan from the Vermont Community Development program in order to help assure a year-round manufacturing facility in Northfield filled with employed Vermonters, and
Whereas, this well‑managed corporation exemplifies the type of small locally owned and operated business which is vital for Vermont’s economic prosperity, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates Marc Cabot, and his son Ric, on the occasion of Cabot Hosiery Mills’ 25th anniversary, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Marc and Ric Cabot at the Cabot Hosiery Mills in Northfield.
