NO. R-193.  House concurrent resolution honoring Allie the dog for her heroic rescue of the Hitormis Club in Bellows Falls.

(H.C.R.123)

Offered by:  Representatives Obuchowski of Rockingham, Partridge of Windham, Emmons of Springfield and Martin of Springfield.

Offered by:  Senators Gander of Windham County and White of Windham County.

Whereas, the Hitormis Club was established in 1930 as a skeet shooting club for employees of the former Fellows Gear Shaper Company, later renamed the Fellows Corporation in Rockingham, and

Whereas, over the decades, membership in the club expanded to include any man or woman with a connection to the machine tool industry, and

Whereas, skeet shooting activities ceased at the onset of World War II, and the Hitormis Club assumed its current role as a social club which rents its clubhouse located on a high bluff, and includes a kitchen and a magnificent social hall, featuring gear chandeliers, a giant fieldstone fireplace, and a spectacular view of the Connecticut River, and

Whereas, on the morning of August 12, 2002, the future of this historic dining facility was imminently threatened as a suspicious fire suddenly sprouted in the kitchen and was on the verge of spreading its destructive wrath throughout the club, and

Whereas, a calamitous end to this glorious institution was narrowly avoided when Allie, the German short-haired pointer, who resides across the street from the club on Missing Link Road, sensed the fire and commenced a loud and continuous bark which alerted her owners, Kevin and Ann Greenwood, who quickly called 911, and

Whereas, while the club’s kitchen and southeast end were damaged, and several months’ worth of previously‑scheduled rentals were canceled, the building was saved, and after reconstructing the kitchen, the club reopened this winter, and

Whereas, in honor of Alllie’s amazing heroism, she was feted at a special rendition of the club’s monthly Polish night where, in addition to the traditional fare of kielbasa, galumpkis, and latkes, a special package of sumptuous canine delicacies, including a bag of dog food, a box of dog treats, and a large rawhide bone certain to please the most discriminating dog was served, and

Whereas, Allie’s quick response and boisterous warnings assured the Hitormis Club’s future, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to honor Allie for her heroic howling on behalf of the Hitormis Club, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Kevin and Ann Greenwood in Bellows Falls and to the Hitormis Club, also in Bellows Falls.
