†††† Whereas, effective science teaching is essential both for an educated populace in our increasingly technological society and for enticing young people to pursue professional careers in science-related fields, be they in academia, research, government or industry, and

†††† Whereas, as an incentive for elementary and secondary science teachers to aspire to excellence, the National Science Foundation annually designates 200 top teachers for special recognition, and

†††† Whereas, initially, teachers in each state nominate deserving colleagues for this special honor, then, after an initial screening of the state nominees, a panel consisting of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, and educators carefully reviews each applicant, ultimately winnowing the contenders down to a final 200 award recipients, and

†††† Whereas, among the 2002 honorees was 24-year veteran, Northfield High School science teacher, Gail Hall, and

†††† Whereas, she was honored, along with the other award winners, at a Washington, D.C. ceremony where she was presented a special citation which President Bush signed, and a $7,500.00 grant to improve science and mathematics instruction at Northfield High School, and

†††† Whereas, her skills and proficiency as a science instructor have not gone unnoticed as she is currently on a two-year leave of absence from Northfield High School to serve as a high school science assessment specialist for the state of Vermont, and

†††† Whereas, in response to the announcement of her award, she commented that she was delighted to have received this unusual commendation, but that many teachers in Vermont were equally deserving, and

†††† Whereas, Gail Hall is an exemplary role model for other science teachers in Vermont, now therefore be it

†††† Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

†††† That the General Assembly congratulates Gail Hall on the National Science Foundationís designation as one of the nationís top science teachers, and be it further

Resolved:† That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Gail Hall at the department of education.
