Whereas, Hubert Beardís life has been inextricably tied to his familyís enterprise, H.P. Beard Hardware, one of Johnsonís most esteemed mercantile establishments, and
Whereas, while he was growing up, the store and his home were located in the same building, the retailing and domestic activities of a young boy intertwining, and
Whereas, given his proximity to the nails and hammers which are the essentials of a hardware storeís inventory, it was inevitable that young Hubert, at the wise age of 10, ventured downstairs from his familyís residence to begin his duties as the latest generation of Beard family entrepreneurs, and
Whereas, he continued working in the store through his adolescent years, and as an adult, devoted his full-time attention to his familyís business, and
Whereas, over the decades, H.P. Beard Hardware, under Hubert Beardís competent and steady management, has withstood the competitive pressure of larger, more contemporary hardware stores and has continued to be the place where Lamoille County residents can go to buy just the precise home repair item they require, and
Whereas, credit for H.P. Beardís continued vitality as a locally‑owned in‑town retailer is also attributed to Hubert Beardís wife Florence and son Alan who have been essential members of the storeís operational team, and
Whereas, 2003 marks Hubert Beardís 75th anniversary behind the H.P. Beard sales counter, and coincidentally, his 85th birthday, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates Hubert Beard as he celebrates both three‑quarters of a century association with H.P. Beard Hardware store and his 85th birthday, and be it further
Resolved:† That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Hubert Beard at H.P. Beard Hardware store in Johnson.
