Whereas, it is important that the schoolchildren of Vermont understand and appreciate the sacrifice our stateís veterans have made in defending the United States in battle, and

Whereas, hearing directly from veterans regarding their military experiences, visiting a veteransí cemetery, and learning the way to properly care for the American Flag are all activities which will instill in students a greater knowledge of veteransí roles in our countryís history, and

Whereas, annually on Memorial Day, Vermonters and all Americans pay tribute to the crucial role veterans have played in defending our nationís independence and liberty, and

Whereas, the presence of veterans as participants in Memorial Day ceremonies serves as an outstanding educational opportunity, and

Whereas, organizations such as the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are a ready resource for facilitating local schoolsí Memorial Day programs, and

Whereas, schools should be encouraged to contact their local veteransí organization unit or the state headquarters of a veteransí organization to arrange for veterans to visit a local school for a Memorial Day observance, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly urges teachers and local school administrators to invite members of veteransí organizations to commemorate Memorial Day with their students, and be it further

Resolved:† That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Vermont School Boards Association, the Vermont Principals Association and the Vermont Office of Veteransí Affairs.
