Offered by:  Representatives Brooks of Montpelier, Donahue of Northfield, Grad of Moretown, Kitzmiller of Montpelier and Valliere of Barre City.

Offered by:  Senator Cummings of Washington County, Senator Doyle of Washington County and Senator Scott of Washington County.

Whereas, in recent years, Norwich University ice hockey has soared to the pinnacle of NCAA Division III competition, and the Norwich Cadets clinched their place in the 2003 national championship game with a 6-3 penultimate triumph over top-ranked St. Norbert, and

Whereas, the championship contest, played before an enthusiastic capacity crowd at Norwich’s own Kreitzberg Arena, pitted the Cadets against SUNYAC champion Oswego State University, and

Whereas, after an exciting, but scoreless first period of hockey, late in the second period, Oswego scored on a power play to take the lead, and

Whereas, the Cadets skated on to the ice for the third period trailing 1-0, strongly determined not to disappoint their many hometown supporters, and

Whereas, at 5:50 of the third period, the Cadets tied the game at 1-1, and

Whereas, shortly thereafter, at the 7:01 mark, a slapshot from the blue line that slid inside the far post enabled the Cadets to top Oswego 2-1 and triumphantly cap a 27-3 season by winning the NCAA Division III ice hockey championship, and

Whereas, Kevin Schieve, Brad Powell, Brian Mullally, Toza Crnilovic, Ryan Thompson, Chris Fuss, Lou DiMasi, Matt Schmidt, Peter Catalano, Paul Mattucci, Ed Boudreau, Jon Bokelmann, Bob Jaggard, Vadim Beliaev, Marshall Lee, Kurtis McLean, Chris Petracco, Lynn Beedle, Michael Serba, Andrew Senesi, Phil Aucoin, Dominick Dawes, Mario Chinelli, John Grabie, Garett Winder, Randy Hevey, Mike Boudreau, and Aaron Lee can be proud of their accomplishments as members of the 2002-2003 Norwich University Cadets ice hockey team, and

Whereas, the reasons for head coach Mike McShane’s winning 418-267-45 collegiate coaching record were on display throughout the 2002-2003 season, and assistant coaches Steve Mattson and Fred Coan, strength coach Eric Corey, trainer Rachel Sutherland and student trainer Desiree Jubinville each contributed to the team’s first-rate coaching and support system, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 2002-2003 Norwich University NCAA Division III championship ice hockey team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Norwich University President Richard Schneider, athletic director Tony Mariano and head ice hockey coach Mike McShane at Norwich University.
