NO. R-87.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2003 Danville High School Indians Division IV championship girls’ basketball team.

(H.C.R.51)

Offered by:  Representative Larrabee of Danville.

Offered by:  Senator Ide of Caledonia County.

Whereas, the Danville High School Indians girls’ basketball team is famous for traveling a winning path, having captured the Division IV crown in 1988, 1993, 1998, 2000, and 2001, and

Whereas, after a hiatus from standing in victory circle in 2002, the young Danville hoopsters were prepared to return the championship title to their southern Caledonia County community, and

Whereas, seeded number 2, behind the top-seeded and until championship game, undefeated, Wilmington Warriors, the Indians had the support of hundreds of hometown fans who filled the Barre Auditorium, and

Whereas, late in this extremely thrilling game, the nearly evenly-matched teams were deadlocked in a 41-41 tie when Wilmington surged ahead on several fast plays to gain a 46-41 lead, and

Whereas, recognizing that immediate action was essential, Danville senior Lauren Bertolini expertly directed free throws from the foul line and teammate Lyndsay Calkins converted a rebound to draw the Indians to a single-point deficit with a 46-45 Wilmington advantage, and

Whereas, despite the addition of a Warrior free-throw point, Danville’s Karri Sicard tapped in a field shot to once again tie the contest, this time at

47-all, and she quickly repeated this feat, with the aid of Brittney Larrabee, and the Indians had a precarious 49-47 lead, and

Whereas, with 3:18 remaining to play, four successful throws by foul line shooting ace Loren Bertolini assured the young women from the more northerly school a 53-50 victory and a season record of 22-1, and

Whereas, the cheering Danville fans jumped for joy as they witnessed a stunning display of basketball savvy as they have throughout the season whenever their favorite team, consisting of Chelsea Murray, Naomi Racenet, Lindsay Calkins, Kellie Woods. Ashton Coutu, Lauren Bertolini, Abby Lazerick, Amanda Melendy, Tiffany Johnson, Tess Gadapee, Brittney Larrabee, Jen White, Brittany Benoit, and Karri Sicard, played the game featuring the large circumferential orange ball with the black lines, and

Whereas, the team benefited from the expert direction of Coach Tammy Rainville and assistant coaches Ron Sicard and Karen Moran, and the organizational support of team manager Christina Machell, now therefore be it
