NO. R-82.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2003 Bellows Falls Union High School Terriers Division I championship girls’ basketball team.

(H.C.R. 46)

Offered by:  Representatives Obuchowski of Rockingham, Partridge of Windham, Darrow of Dummerston, Deen of Westminster and Martin of Springfield.

Offered by:  Senator Gander of Windham County and Senator White of Windham County

Whereas, the Bellows Falls Union High School Terriers Division I girls’ basketball team was the envy of the competition this season as the squad remained undefeated in every contest, and

Whereas, the Terriers’ steady march to the championship game against Bennington’s Mt. Anthony Union High School Patriots provided the team’s fans with a special opportunity to witness girls’ interscholastic varsity basketball played with confidence and finesse, and

Whereas, the championship game’s intensity and each squad’s keen desire to bring home the Division I title was apparent during the first quarter as the scoring lead bounced back and forth before the Patriots finished ahead 17-12 at the closing buzzer, and

Whereas, once the second quarter was under way, and the excitement of playing in the season’s finale before the 1,200-spectator audience in Burlington became less of a novelty, the Terriers settled into their usual commanding playing style as the quarter featured a 21-3 scoring run in Bellows Falls’ favor which enabled the girls from Windham County to assume, and never relinquish, the lead, and

Whereas, this enthusiastic second quarter performance featured superb playing on the part of every Terrier, including consecutive field goals early on by Dani Rayner, who later in the same period mastered two long-range

three-point plays, and her sister and shooting colleague Jevy, who concluded the second period executing her own three-pointer, thus enabling the Terriers to leave the hardwood court at halftime holding a commanding 33-20 lead, and

Whereas, despite the Patriots’ outscoring the Terriers 14-13 during the third quarter, Bellows Falls players, such as Trista Dancosse who scored four points late in the third quarter, kept the Terriers on the championship path, and

Whereas, the Terriers’ strong final quarter play resulted in a resounding

59-43 game and the Division I championship victory, and

Whereas, each Terrier team member, including tri-captains Trista Dancosse, Jevy Rayner, and Dani Rayner and invaluable teammates Katie Harmon, Brittany Fry, Melissa Belcher, Jenna Kane, Stacey Martin, Chemarin Fontaine, Sara Hearne, Brittany Podwin, Anna Morse, and Missy Lawrence, individually deserves recognition for her season-long role in contributing to the Division I championship, and they all appreciated the support of team managers Peter Chisamore, Mackenzie Monahan, and both Peter and Mark Frink, and

Whereas, Coach Jayne Barber and assistant coaches Russell Pickering, John Hollar, and Jennie Perry always provided their guidance to the team, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the 23-0 undefeated 2003 Bellows Union High School Division I championship girls’ basketball team, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jayne Barber at Bellows Falls Union High School.
