NO. R-57.  House concurrent resolution congratulating former Grand Isle County Sheriff John Lawrence on three decades of outstanding public service.

(H.C.R.29)

Offered by:  Representatives Trombley of Grand Isle, Johnson of South Hero and Wright of Burlington.

Offered by:  Senator Mazza of Grand Isle County, Senator Collins of Franklin County and Senator Kittell of Franklin County.

Whereas, John Lawrence has dedicated three decades to improving the law enforcement services on the islands and mainland that constitute Grand Isle County, and

Whereas, when he was first elected sheriff of Grand Isle County in 1972, the largely island county presented a more rural and agricultural vista rather than the increasingly suburban landscape which reflects the county’s current demographics, and

Whereas, farmers and suburbanites alike have come to appreciate the professionalism which he has personally exhibited and instilled in his staff, and

Whereas, during his tenure, the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department closely mirrored the population growth within the jurisdiction, as his position evolved from part-time to full-time status, and the number of deputy sheriffs increased to meet the public safety needs of the county’s rapidly expanding population, and

Whereas, the high caliber of the department’s professional services was demonstrated when the department was awarded a second-place finish in a nationwide law enforcement challenge, which the International Association of Police Officers sponsored, and

Whereas, the increased motor vehicle traffic traveling on the island required Sheriff Lawrence to enhance the department’s highway protection services, a challenge he met within the budgetary resources of the county, and

Whereas, after three decades of exemplary law enforcement leadership, Sheriff Lawrence retired from the force on February 1, 2003, and

Whereas, his skills and knowledge will be missed among law enforcement officers both in Grand Isle County and throughout the state of Vermont, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates former Grand Isle County Sheriff John Lawrence on his outstanding 30-year tenure and wishes him all the best in the years ahead, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to John Lawrence in the town of Grand Isle.
