Whereas, the Grafton‑based Windham Foundation was established in 1963 as a nonprofit organization whose threefold mission includes restoration of Graftonís buildings and economic vitality, support for educational activities, and promotion of the general welfare of Vermont and Vermonters, and

Whereas, the foundation takes great pride in enhancing Vermontís cultural, social, and economic spheres, and

Whereas, the foundationís premier role has been the restoration of† outstanding old buildings, nearly one‑half the total number, in the village of Grafton, which has transformed Grafton into a vibrant and living example of a Vermont village restored to the glories of an earlier era, and

Whereas, beyond its admirable work in Grafton, the foundation has assisted in the preservation and maintenance of farm- and forestland, and in Brattleboro, it was instrumental in saving the farm operations that were once associated with the Brattleboro Retreat, and

Whereas, many students from Windham County, who attend both college and professional technical education programs, have benefited from the foundationís scholarship support, and

Whereas, the Windham Foundationís multiple contributions to its home community and beyond have resulted in its being named the 2003 Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerceís Corporate Citizen of the Year, and

Whereas, this accolade rightfully honors one of Vermontís most respected philanthropic institutions whose activities have, in numerous ways, spurred economic development while sustaining Vermontís village and agricultural legacy, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Windham Foundation on being named the 2003 Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerceís Corporate Citizen of the Year, and be it further

Resolved:† That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the offices of the Windham Foundation in Grafton.
