Joint Senate Resolution

By Senators Doyle, Cummings and Scott,

J.R.S. 130. Joint resolution in memory of former Representative John P. Connarn of Northfield.

Whereas, John Connarn served his community in a variety of civic roles and the state of Vermont in all three branches of government, and

Whereas, a native of Brattleboro, he resided nearly all his life in Northfield, and

Whereas, John Connarn graduated from Northfield High School, and he was a cadet at Norwich University from which he graduated in 1941, and

Whereas, after meritorious service in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Theater in World War II, in which he was severely wounded in France, he earned a law degree from the University of Maine, and

Whereas, in 1956, the citizens of Northfield elected this able attorney to represent their town in the House of Representatives where he faithfully served for four terms, and

Whereas, in 1964, his reputation for integrity and legal skill prompted the voters of this state to elect John Connarn to the office of attorney general, and

Whereas, recognizing his outstanding professional qualifications, in 1967 the General Assembly elected him to a seat on the Vermont District Court, and he presided with great distinction in both district and superior courtrooms until his retirement from the bench in 1985, and

Whereas, after retiring from the bench, he performed volunteer legal work at the Northfield Development Corporation, and

Whereas, John Connarn greeted guests at the Margaret Holland Inn in Northfield where he was the owner and innkeeper, and

Whereas, he had served two terms on the Northfield School Board, and

Whereas, aside from serving in public office, he had volunteered as a local scout master, and

Whereas, throughout his life, he remained loyal to his alma mater, serving as president of the Norwich University Alumni Association and as District Captain of the Norwich University 2000 Fund Drive, and

Whereas, John Connarn was a member of St. John The Evangelist Church and the Sorrell Maynard American Legion Post 63, both in Northfield, and

Whereas, he was the husband of Barbara Connarn, and the father of two daughters, Julie and Patricia, a son Michael, and the stepfather of four stepsons, Marcin, William, Robert and Ronald, and

Whereas, his presence in Northfield will be missed, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends condolences to the family of former Representative, Attorney General and Judge John P. Connarn, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Barbara Connarn in Northfield.
