Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to direct the commissioner of education to establish a pilot summer study program which will enable selected students to graduate from high school one semester early, and to appropriate funds therefor.

AN ACT TO FUND A PILOT SUMMER STUDY PROGRAM TO ENABLE SELECTED STUDENTS TO GRADUATE EARLY

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:

Sec. 1. EARLY GRADUATION; PILOT SUMMER STUDY PROGRAM; APPROPRIATION

(a) In the summer of 2002, the commissioner of education shall establish a summer study program for selected high school students which would enable each student to earn one semester of credits toward a high school diploma. The intent is to select students throughout the state who would benefit from early graduation so that they could use the next semester to earn funds for attendance at a postsecondary institution.

(b) The amount of $1.00 is appropriated to the department of education for the purpose of establishing and running a summer study program pursuant to this act.

(c) On or before January 15, 2003, the commissioner of education shall report to the house and senate committees on education on the results of the pilot summer study program established by this act.
