Subject: Fish and wildlife; wolves; introduction prohibited

Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to prohibit the introduction of wolves into Vermont.

AN ACT RELATING TO A PROHIBITION AGAINST INTRODUCTION OF WOLVES INTO VERMONT

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:

Sec. 1. 10 V.S.A. § 4834 is added to read:

§ 4834. INTRODUCTION OF WOLVES

(a) The general assembly finds that wolf introduction into the northeast, especially Vermont, is an extreme wildlife management technique, and that the responsibilities and problems that may result from wolf introduction will fall on local residents. Therefore, the general assembly hereby prohibits anyone, including the federal government, from introducing wolves into Vermont.

(b) The commissioner shall communicate this prohibition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency, and shall oppose any attempt by anyone to reintroduce a wolf population into or near Vermont.

(c) No person or agency shall introduce or attempt to introduce any type of wolf, including members of the genera Canis lupis and Canis rufus, into Vermont.
