NO. R-50. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE MEN'S HOCKEY TEAM.

Whereas, the members of the Middlebury Men's Hockey Panthers consistently maintain high academic and athletic standards, and
Whereas, the Middlebury Men's Hockey Panthers had never won a national championship title, and
Whereas, the 1994-1995 squad was comprised of eight first-year and only two senior players, and
Whereas, the team's overwhelmingly youthful demeanor had falsely led the sporting pundits to forecast a lowly 11th place finish in the "ECAC East" hockey standings, and
Whereas, the hockey Panthers, including their enthusiastic co-captains Ian Smith, Dave Medow and Martin Lachaine stunned the prognosticators and ultimately compiled a seasonal tally of 22 victories, 2 defeats and 2 ties, and
Whereas, the 1995 NCAA Division III hockey finals were fortuitously scheduled for Middlebury's Duke Nelson Arena, and
Whereas, recognizing this historic opportunity to win a national collegiate athletic championship on its home campus, the team exuded extraordinary confidence during the weekend's tournament, and
Whereas, in the final contest against Fredonia State, Middlebury goalie Chris Farion furiously guarded his territory to achieve 15 saves, and
Whereas, on a play that defenseman Ian Smith started, freshman Mark Spence ultimately scored the game's only goal and assured the Panthers the Division III Hockey Championship, and
Whereas, throughout the season, and in the semi-final match against Wisconsin-River Falls, Panthers' goalie Francois Borbeau demonstrated brilliant defensive strategy, and
Whereas, the entire Panther team under the skillful direction of coach Bill Beaney brought unforgettable thrills and school pride to the Middlebury community, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly extends its heartiest congratulations to the MiddleburyPanthers' Men's Hockey Team on its spectacular season and stunning NCAA Division III 1995 hockey championship title, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Middlebury College Men's Hockey Coach Bill Beaney.
